Francesco Marelli is an expert in global security. He has worked for the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) since 2003. He is responsible for the field of technology and security, including the SIRIO project in Geneva. His work focuses on the analysis, identification and testing of innovative solutions for monitoring and combating organized crime and terrorism. In 2002, he was awarded a PhD from the Department of History at the University of Leeds.

Established in 1968

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), established in 1968, operates as an autonomous institution within the United Nations system. Governed by a Board of Trustees, UNICRI's mission is to advance justice, crime prevention, security, and the rule of law to support global peace, human rights, and sustainable development. Its work is closely aligned with Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which emphasizes the promotion of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.

UNICRI focuses on enhancing understanding of crime-related issues, fostering efficient criminal justice systems, supporting the adherence to international legal standards, and facilitating international law enforcement cooperation.

Promoting national self-reliance through research and cooperation

With over 50 years of experience, the Institute has developed specialized programs that address contemporary challenges such as artificial intelligence in criminal justice, cybercrimes, environmental crimes, and violent extremism.

UNICRI’s approach involves promoting national self-reliance and institutional capacity-building through research, technical cooperation, and specialized training. The Institute provides high-level expertise and action-oriented research to assist in the formulation of policies and concrete intervention programs.

Security of major events such as the Olympic games

Key areas of UNICRI’s work include the mitigation of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks, protection of vulnerable populations, illicit financial flows, and the security of major events. By creating and testing new approaches, UNICRI plays a pivotal role in advancing global crime prevention and justice, often complementing the efforts of other international organizations.

Through its comprehensive and innovative initiatives, UNICRI continues to contribute to the global fight against crime and the promotion of justice, supporting the stability and development of societies worldwide.

Here's the second part of a rich interview with Francesco Marelli on July 10 at UNICRI in Geneva.
